Import from an M-Pesa statement

Your paybill or till statement already knows which phone each tenant pays from. Nyumbisha reads it so their next payment matches itself.

A tenant often pays from a number that is not the one you have for them: a spouse's line, a work phone, a shop's float. Until Nyumbisha knows that number, their payment waits for you to match it by hand. Your statement is the evidence that teaches it, before the first payment arrives.

Export the statement

  1. Sign in to the M-Pesa business portal for your paybill or till.
  2. Open the statement, and choose the last three to six months.
  3. Export it as CSV or Excel. The file should have columns such as Receipt No., Completion Time, Paid In and Other Party Info.
  4. In Nyumbisha, open Import and choose the file under Your M-Pesa statement.

How payments are matched

Each payment into your account is matched to one of your tenants, strongest evidence first. A payment that fits more than one tenant is left unmatched rather than guessed.

Matched byWhenWhat it teaches
Paybill codeThe account number typed was a unit's codeThe paying number, trusted for automatic matching
PhoneThe paying number is already one of the tenant'sNothing new
Masked phoneNewer statements hide digits (2547****678); the visible ones fit one tenantNothing: the full number is not shown
NameThe payer's name is exactly one tenant's nameThe paying number, offered as a suggestion only

What you choose, and what changes

  • You see every payment in the statement, who it matched and how, and a list of paying numbers worth remembering. Untick any you do not trust.
  • Remembered numbers that paid into a unit's code match automatically from then on. Numbers found only by name are shown to you as suggestions when they pay, never matched on their own.
  • Nothing is recorded as a payment, and no one's balance changes. A file is not money arriving; live payments come from M-Pesa itself.
  • The statement is read and discarded. It is not stored.
